The firefly season is ending. I only saw 200 of them or so. There was one female directly on the forest road. If only I brought my camera and tripod, that would have worked out I reckon. I had my torch with me and this looked really cool.
Dusk took forever today. It was really long light out there. Full moon is tomorrow.
On the way back, there was suddenly a load clatter and crashing sound 100 meters away from me. I didn’t see anything, but a tree fell over in the forest out of the blue. Fuck me dead, that was scary as hell. Luckily, I was already on the main road, only meadows around me. It’s the second time I witnessed a tree accidentally coming down. The first one was during the most expensive hail storm in our area so far in 2011 behind me when setting up a summer camp. The weather changed in less than 15 minutes.
Maybe not such a good idea to go out so late alone. :-? Any rustling in the forest immediately reminded me of the boar the other day. Luckily, always false alarm. Still a bit terrified from that event.
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org I noticed that loading="lazy" might not be so great after all.
This is without lazy loading:

The total page load time is around 400-500 ms. Okay.
Now this is with lazy loading:

It finished much quicker, after about 250 ms. Sounds good.
But notice this gap right here?

This wasn’t there before. With lazy loading, it now takes something like 80-100 ms until the browser even starts loading images. This is Chromium, but Firefox shows a similar gap.
The net result is that there is a very noticeable delay/flicker when you open a page, because it takes so long until the images have loaded. Yes, the layout doesn’t shift around, but that has nothing to do with lazy loading.
How odd. 🤔
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org Sounds lovely! (I think. Not sure about spider webs and such. 😅)

For this week’s (slightly late) #caturday, I’d like to introduce our 4th and final feline resident, the old boy we call Bugsy. He’s been with us for 8 years, and we think he’s 13-14 years old (but he’s not saying).
He used to sound a bit like a cartoon gangster (hence the name), but as the years have passed, he started to sound more like late-stage William Hickey (Uncle Lewis from Christmas Vacation).
He’s our sweet little old man, and he is loved.
@bender@twtxt.net That certainly sounds much better in English, yeah. 😅

@bender@twtxt.net So yeah, no, I do not have an inner monologue at all. Most of the time my inner mind is busy just replaying music or visuals (or at least it used to before I lost my sight, these days it just replays visuals and sounds), but there is never a time when I “talk to myself”, ever, I don’t ever think through something, a problem or an activity and have self-arguments. I just do.
@arne@uplegger.eu This is interesting. Sorry I missed this, I just found this post of yours and wanted to contribute 😅 Here’s something interesting about me… I don’t ever talk to myself, like ever. I have no, what they call, “inner monologue”. Maybe I’m odd, but my wife asked me this very same question a while back and I said the same, there is never anything in my head except ideas, visuals or sounds, sometimes all at once, but never an inner monologue of “talking to myself”.
@prologic@twtxt.net I don’t know how to phrase the answer without sounding too bitter. 🤣 Let’s just say, nope, it won’t work.

@prologic@twtxt.net @movq@www.uninformativ.de @bender@twtxt.net Thank you very much! <3
I only filtered out the noise floor of the camera itself. I selected one second of “silence” in Audacity and used the “Effect” → “Noise reduction” (Rausch-Verminderung in German) dialog with its default settings. I repeated that two or three times in total with different sections of “silence”. It’s very hard to find something where there is really no other bird singing in the background. But in contrast to the original audio, the edited version is noticeably more squeaky I find.
Oh, and I increased the volume. Especially after the noise reduction, everything is a bit quieter.
I got rather lucky, only a few cars went by and my microphone is too shitty, to really pick it up. :-D It’s kinda drowned out by the background noise. 45 seconds into the video, a car passes. Also at 1:10 without a doubt. I’m sure there were actually many were. Most of them passed behind me, the mic is facing away from that sound source. Of course, the densely built-up area still reflects a lot.
It also helped that Azabache is a loud singer himself. Fortunately, no idiots screaming either.
If you want to compare yourself or play around to see what other improvements you are able to achieve, I uploaded the original from the camera in the same directory under the lovely name DSCN5687.MOV. It’s 236.1 MiB in size.

Everything changes, right? I know we sound like curmudgeons, and perhaps AI is the next step.
