@movq@www.uninformativ.de you said you liked seeing the hash (which is a fair choice!). All I am asking is for a reconsideration as a user configurable feature. ;-) It looks redundant, in my opinion.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de I don’t know if I’d want to discard the twts. I think what I’m looking for is a command ā€œjenny -g https://host.org/twtxt.txtā€ to fetch just that one feed, even if it’s not in my follow list. I could wrap that in a shell script so that when I see a twt in reply to a feed I don’t follow, I can just tap a key and the feed will get added to my maildir. I guess the script would look for a mention at the start of a selected twt and call jenny -g on the feed.

Besides @lyse's example, I could imagine just accidentally renaming my own twtxt file, or forgetting to push it when I point my DNS to a new web server. I'd rather not lose all my yarnd followers in a situation like that (and hopefully they feel the same).

@bender@twtxt.net Based on my experience so far, as a user, I would be upset if my client dropped someone from my follower list, i.e. stopped fetching their feed, without me asking for that to happen.

@prologic@twtxt.net The headline is interesting and sent me down a rabbit hole understanding what the paper (https://aclanthology.org/2024.acl-long.279/) actually says.

The result is interesting, but the Neuroscience News headline greatly overstates it. If I’ve understood right, they are arguing (with strong evidence) that the simple technique of making neural nets bigger and bigger isn’t quite as magically effective as people say — if you use it on its own. In particular, they evaluate LLMs without two common enhancements, in-context learning and instruction tuning. Both of those involve using a small number of examples of the particular task to improve the model’s performance, and they turn them off because they are not part of what is called ā€œemergenceā€: ā€œan ability to solve a task which is absent in smaller models, but present in LLMsā€.

They show that these restricted LLMs only outperform smaller models (i.e demonstrate emergence) on certain tasks, and then (end of Section 4.1) discuss the nature of those few tasks that showed emergence.

I’d love to hear more from someone more familiar with this stuff. (I’ve done research that touches on ML, but neural nets and especially LLMs aren’t my area at all.) In particular, how compelling is this finding that zero-shot learning (i.e. without in-context learning or instruction tuning) remains hard as model size grows.

@prologic@twtxt.net I don’t know what you mean when you call them stochastic parrots, or how you define understanding. It’s certainly true that current language models show an obvious lack of understanding in many situations, but I find the trend impressive. I would love to see someone achieve similar results with much less power or training data.

In-reply-to » I setup and switched to Headscale last night. It was relatively simple, I spent more time installing a web GUI to manage it to be honest, the actual server is simple enough. The native Tailscale Android app even works with it thankfully.

@prologic@twtxt.net Yes I suppose that is true. There is an article on Tailscale’s site that explains it all quite a bit: https://tailscale.com/blog/how-nat-traversal-works

To me, with CGNAT, it’s a small miracle that a direct connection can be made between peers (as opposed to going through a relay constantly) but it does indeed work. I guess to host it at home you would need to have it WAN accessible, and if you’ve already gone to the trouble of port forwarding etc… well šŸ˜…
Not that I could personally do that, but for those with static IPs etc.

@prologic@twtxt.net I don’t think it’s your code. As you said in one of your commit comments, the internet is a hostile place! That’s partly why I reacted the way I did: all things considered it’s usually better to react quickly and clean up the mess later, then it is to wait and risk further damage. Anyway it sucks @xuu@txt.sour.is got caught up in it. Hopefully it’s all good now.

I was receiving many broken (HTTP 400 error) requests per second from an IP address I didn’t recognize, right after having my VPS crash because the hard drive filled up with bogus data. None of this had happened on this VPS before, so it was a new problem that I didn’t understand and I took immediate action to get it under control. Of course I reported the IP address to its abuse email. That’s a 100% normal, natural, and ā€œcoolā€ thing to do in such a situation. At the time I had no idea it was @xuu@txt.sour.is .

The moment I realized it was @xuu@txt.sour.is and definitely a false alarm, I emailed the ISP and told them this was a false positive and to not ban or block the IP in question because it was not abusive traffic. They haven’t yet responded but I do hope they’ve stopped taking action, and if there’s anything else I can do to certify to them that this is not abuse then I will do that.

I run numerous services on that VPS that I rely on, and I spent most of my day today cleaning up the mess all this has caused. I get that this caused @xuu@txt.sour.is a lot of stress and I’m sincerely sorry about that and am doing what I can to rectify the situation. But calling me ā€œnot coolā€ isn’t necessary. This was an unfortunate situation that we’re trying to make right and there’s no need for criticizing anyone.

@bender@twtxt.net haha funny! though i just realized my ISP is the only one with fiber pulled to the property so i would have to get a phone line from them some how. The other ISP in the area is basically a mobile hotspot.
