In-reply-to » There is a bug in yarnd that's been around for awhile and is still present in the current version I'm running that lets a person hit a constructed URL like

@prologic@twtxt.net This does not seem to fix the problem for me, or I’ve done something wrong. I did the following:

  1. Pull the latest version from git (I have commit 7ad848, same as on twtxt.net I believe).
  2. make build and make install
  3. Restart yarnd
  4. Refresh cache in Poderator Settings

Yet I still see these bogus /external things on my pod when I hit URLs like the one I sent you recently. When I hit such a URL with curl I think it’s giving an error? But in a web browser, the (buggy) response is the same as it was before I updated.

So, this problem is not fixed for me.

There is a bug in yarnd that’s been around for awhile and is still present in the current version I’m running that lets a person hit a constructed URL like

YOUR_POD/external?nick=lovetocode999&uri=https://socialmphl.com/story19510368/doujin

and see a legitimate-looking page on YOUR_POD, with an HTTP code 200 (success). From that fake page you can even follow an external feed. Try it yourself, replacing “YOUR_POD” with the URL of any yarnd pod you know. Try following the feed.

I think URLs like this should return errors. They should not render HTML, nor produce legitimate-looking pages. This mechanism is ripe for DDoS attacks. My pod gets roughly 70,000 hits per day to URLs like this. Many are porn or other types of content I do not want. At this point, if it’s not fixed soon I am going to have to shut down my pod. @prologic@twtxt.net please have a look.

In-reply-to » @movq Is there a good way to get jenny to do a one-off fetch of a feed, for when you want to fill in missing parts of a thread? I just added @slashdot to my private follow file just because @prologic keeps responding to the feed :-P and I want to know what he's commenting on even though I don't want to see every new slashdot twt.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de I don’t know if I’d want to discard the twts. I think what I’m looking for is a command “jenny -g https://host.org/twtxt.txt” to fetch just that one feed, even if it’s not in my follow list. I could wrap that in a shell script so that when I see a twt in reply to a feed I don’t follow, I can just tap a key and the feed will get added to my maildir. I guess the script would look for a mention at the start of a selected twt and call jenny -g on the feed.

In-reply-to » (#vciyu3q) @bender I'm not a yarnd user, but automatically unfollowing on 404 doesn't seem right. Besides @lyse's example, I could imagine just accidentally renaming my own twtxt file, or forgetting to push it when I point my DNS to a new web server. I'd rather not lose all my yarnd followers in a situation like that (and hopefully they feel the same).

@bender@twtxt.net Based on my experience so far, as a user, I would be upset if my client dropped someone from my follower list, i.e. stopped fetching their feed, without me asking for that to happen.

John Searle and Daniel Dennett on Consciousness

Below I am here giving voice to a conversation in articles on the subject of consciousness originally published by the New York Review of Books and in John Searle’s book The Mystery of Consciousness.

I find these hilarious.

Here, Searle’s adversary, well-known and now late “philosopher” Daniel Dennett follows the logical train of verificationist modern science to its logical conclusion: the denial of the subjective—the consciousness itself—the thing, the … ⌘ Read more

I think @abucci@anthony.buc.ci and @stigatle@yarn.stigatle.no are running snac? I didn’t have a closer look at snac (no intention of running it), but if that is a relatively small daemon (maybe comparable to Yarn?) that gives you access to the whole world of ActivityPub, then, well, yeah … That’s tough to beat.

Yes, I am running snac on the same VPS where I run my yarn pod. I heard of it from @stigatle@yarn.stigatle.no, so blame him 😏 snac is written in C and is one simple executable, uses very little resources on the server, and stores everything in JSON files (no databases or other integrations; easy to save and migrate your data) . It’s definitely like yarn in that respect.

I haven’t been around yarn much lately. Part of that is that I’ve been very busy at work and home and only have a limited time to spend goofing off on a social network. Part of it is that I’m finding snac very useful: I’ve connected with friends I’d previously lost touch with, I’ve found useful work-related information, I’ve found colleagues to follow, and even found interesting conferences to attend. There’s a lot more going on over there.

I guess if I had to put it simply, I’d say I have limited time to play and there are more kids in the ActivityPub sandbox than this one. That’s not a ding on yarn–I like yarn and twtxt–I’m just time constrained.

The wording can be more subtle like “This feed have not seen much activity within the last year” and maybe adding a UI like I did in timeline showing time ago for all feeds

Image

I agree that it good to clean up the Mastodon re-feeds, but it should also be okay for anyone to spin up a twtxt.txt just for syndicating they stuff from blog or what ever.

The “not receiving replies” could partly be fixed by implementing a working webmentions for twtxt.txt

In-reply-to » @eaplme Yarn could the twtxt I want more then regular twtxt. Though I do like not having to host a yarn pod.

@eaplme@eapl.me
I could try and host timetime it does look nice.

That part is missing on the Web side, there is a commented PHP code to do that
https://github.com/eapl-gemugami/twtxt-php/blob/master/libs/TOTP.php#L121
That code would end up generating an totp secret that I could put into the config?

Does it have a way to follow feeds from the web ui?
Yes, but you have to be logged in. Currently can only add URLs, not edit or unfollow.
How would I edit or unfollow?

That fit website would be nice to just genete a secret and put it into the .config and then using the totp code to login.

In-reply-to » I am thinking about setting up a yarn instance. Twtxt is cool but it would be nice to be able to post from my phone. Local posting would be a cool feature for yarn to have. A feed that can only be viewed by logged in users of that instance.

@eaplme@eapl.me
Yarn could the twtxt I want more then regular twtxt. Though I do like not having to host a yarn pod.

That client looks really cool. A web client that connects to a regular twtxt without the need to host a full yarn pod for just one user and feed.
What is the difference between twtxt-php and timeline from sorenpeter? Does it have a way to follow feeds from the web ui?

I was looking at it and what prevents someone from downloading the .config file and getting the password? Also how would I generate a totp password to use?
I should try to host that it might be the right not a full on yarn pod but also can post from my phone.

The weird thing is in my server logs it shows that your site pulled in the useragent as https://eapl.me/twtxt/?url=https%3A//neotxt.dk/user/darch/twtxt.txt with bytesypider from bytedance? That sounds weird. Plus I can’t grep just twtxt in my logs and find your feed.
