There’s a bunch of Nerd Shitâ„ąïž like that, which mean that I won’t switch to using beeper as my main matrix account.

This is stuff like using my own domain, getting to mess around with appservices, being able to use other open source clients, and other small stuff.

I’ll definitely keep beeper installed to bridge with networks that I haven’t bothered self-hosting a bridge for (which is more than a handful).

But I’d recommend it for less matrix-geeky users in a heartbeat. ✹ ⌘ Read more

Even though the bridges that #beeper use are AGPL licensed, the beeper client is proprietary software 😭

This is big sad.

They almost had it.

It is also kind of limited on google-free android phones, since the QR code scanner for device verification key-signing depends on a google play services API (which microg doesn’t implement). This means that you can’t share message history between your google-free android and the beeper desktop client. ⌘ Read more

Automattic are also a company that has sold user data from tumblr and wordpress.com to openai and midjourney, so you might want to keep that in mind if you’re big against generative AI.

Beeper servers store the message history encrypted, with a key that isn’t sent to the server.

Everything they store is encrypted with these keys, *but* I guess they still can’t encrypt the messages in transit because of the interop dance; so they *can* read messages to some networks at some point. ⌘ Read more

the original plan was to offer subscriptions for something like $5/mo, but today they launched free of charge. they will introduce premium features in the future.

they just got acquired by automattic (the company who made wordpress and recently acquired tumblr).

automattic donated $5 megadollars to the matrix.org foundation in 2020, so I have a pretty good feeling about them.

Automattic recently acquired texts.com too, so I’m guessing that they are trying to become The One Interop Messenger. ⌘ Read more

it’s a chat app that bridges to a bunch of networks seamlessly.

they bridge to signal, discord, whatsapp, fb messenger, instagram, linkedin, telegram, slack, sms, google chat, and IRC

it’s a #Matrix client, so you just get a @username:beeper.com matrix user, which works on matrix too.

the bridges are all open source. they hired tulir, who does the mautrix bridge stuff a couple of years ago.

beeper has people working on the open-source matr

Is ditching the city for a country vineyard as romantic as it sounds?
Leaving the city and buying a vineyard in the country sounds romantic – the fresh air, drinking wine from the grapes you’ve cultivated, working your own hours, and raising a family in wide open spaces. But does the reality live up to the narrative? ⌘ Read more

@sorenpeter@darch.dk a poem about me giving Odo a free bucket:

A glint in his eye, a sly, Ferengi grin,
Quark crossed the promenade, a curious thing within.
No jeweled trinket, no weapon so grand,
But a simple pail held tight in his hand.

Odo, the Constable, with a brow raised high,
“A bucket, Quark? What trickery do you try?”
The Ferengi huckster, with a salesman’s flair,
“A gift, my friend, a constable’s rare!”

“For those late-night spills, a morphing mishap,
This bucket, dear Odo, will catch every scrap.
And should a suspect turn to goop and flee,
This pail’s the answer, a guarantor, you see!”

Odo’s lips twitched, a hint of a smile,
At Quark’s twisted logic, his mercantile style.
“Perhaps,” he conceded, the bucket held tight,
“A useful addition, in the pursuit of right.”

So Quark made his sale, with a wink and a nod,
A bucket for Odo, a Ferengi oddity, odd.
But on Deep Space Nine, where chaos takes hold,
Even a pail can be worth more than gold.

About the account, thanks, but I already have way too many. :-D
