18 rules of Software Engineering

  1. You will regret complexity when on-call
  2. Stop falling in love with your own code
  3. Everything is a trade-off. There’s no “best” 3. Every line of code you write is a liability 4. Document your decisions and designs
  4. Everyone hates code they didn’t write
  5. Don’t use unnecessary dependencies
  6. Coding standards prevent arguments
  7. Write meaningful commit messages
  8. Don’t ever stop learning new things
  9. Code reviews spread knowledge
  10. Always build for maintainability
  11. Ask for help when you’re stuck
  12. Fix root causes, not symptoms
  13. Software is never completed
  14. Estimates are not promises
  15. Ship early, iterate often
  16. Keep. It. Simple.

Solid list, even though 14 is up for debate in my opinion: Software can be completed. You have a use case / problem, you solve that problem, done. Your software is completed now. There might still be bugs and they should be fixed – but this doesn’t “add” to the program. Don’t use “software is never done” as an excuse to keep adding and adding stuff to your code.

Ten Animals That Are More Musical Than You Might Think
The animal kingdom is a hotbed of shocking musical talent. Take the elephant harmonica players, for example, or the bats with death metal growls. While some species might be content to whip up some awful din, these critters develop rhythms, sing like humans, and in the case of the palm cockatoo, even whittle their own […]

Google requires Android applications on Google Play to support 16 KB page sizes
About a year ago, we talked about the fact that Android 15 became page size-agnostic, supporting both 4 KB and 16 KB page sizes. Google was already pushing developers to get their applications ready for 16 KB page sizes, which means recompiling for 16 KB alignment and testing on a 16 KB version of an Android device or simulator. Google is taking the next step now, requiring … ⌘ Read more

10 Contests That Resulted in Famous Works of Art
It seems curious that contests could produce famous works of art. Surely, we might think passion alone, unrelated to money and praise, is the sole source of such superb creations. If so, the ten contests that resulted in the famous masterpieces on this list may change our minds. Related: 10 Fake Paintings and Sculptures That […]

10 Forgotten Fruits & Vegetables
Tomatoes, bananas, potatoes, and onions are some of the most popular fruits and vegetables in our world today, but that wasn’t always the case. Fruits and vegetables that you have never heard of were once the most important and tastiest in their parts of the universe. Some were forgotten after new options were introduced, while […]

Pinta 3.0 brings major GTK4 overhaul
Over 15 years ago, I wrote about the launch of a Paint.NET clone for Linux, called Pinta, written in GTK. That was merely version 0.1, and over time, it’s become somewhat of a staple for many Linux users. The project just released version 3, which is a major revision, moving the application over to GTK4 and Libadwaita. Built on the robust GTK 4 toolkit and the sleek Libadwaita, Pinta 3.0 brings a redesigned user interface that’s faster, more responsive, and … ⌘ Read more

It’s been over three years since the last ReactOS release, but today, in honour of the first commit to the project by the oldest, still active contributor, the project released ReactOS 0.4.15. We are pleased to announce the release of ReactOS 0.4.15! This release offers Plug and Play fixes, audio fixes, memory management fi … ⌘ Read more

Java 24 released
Oracle, the company owned by a guy who purchased a huge chunk of the Kingdom of Hawaii from the Americans, has released Java 24. I’ll be honest and upfront: I just don’t care very much at all about this, as the only interaction I’ve had with Java over the past, I don’t know, 15 years or so, is either because of Minecraft, or because of my obsession with ancient UNIX workstations where Java programs pop up in the weirdest of places. I know Java is massive and used everywhere, but going through the … ⌘ Read more

UnixWare in 2025: still actively developed and maintained
It kind of goes by under the radar, but aside from HP-UX, Solaris, and AIX, there’s another traditional classic UNIX still in active development today: UnixWare (and its sibling, OpenServer). Owned and developed by Xinuos, UnixWare and other related code and IP was acquired by them when the much-hated SCO crashed and burned about 15 years ago or so, and they’ve been maintaining it ever since. Apple’s macOS UNIX certification is a lie
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a someone mentioning macOS is a UNIX approaches 1. In fact, it was only late last year that The Open Group announced that macOS 15.0 was, once again, certified as UNIX, continuing Apple’s long-standing tradition of certifying macOS releases as “real” UNIX®. 10 “Ancient Alien” Artifacts That Have Mundane Explanations
Many relics of human history are so mysterious and wondrous that the imagination, at times, is tempted to run away from the seemingly commonplace and rather unimpressive explanations mainstream archaeology offers.
