What would space exploration look like if it starred more women? | Aeon Essays https://aeon.co/essays/what-would-space-exploration-look-like-if-it-starred-more-women
sending up private space probes to stealthily nudge large asteroids onto collision courses with Earth so that governments keep maintaining their space programs
Band name of the day: land art in space
17: visible but cannot be typed on, fingers hit emptiness.↵1?: invisible, produces characters indistinguishable from spaces. except when I try to run binary analysis tools on the output, which invariably crash.
13: expensive-looking. space runs some evil curlbash, return some similarly evil cmd line. have yet to find out what systems the other keys are supposed to infect, but I think I identified grub and plan9 already? whispers to itself at night. extremely cursed.
Bad idea of the day: get commit access to leftpad and make it so that it spawns a thread that loads amazon.com in an infinite loop for every injected space
Bad idea of the day: furniture modeled on cray equipment, with spaces to put your own computers in

When the world was young, Chaos created vacuum. Space took a look and at that moment, learned what horror vacui was. Even though it only creates more vacuum this way, it’s been running ever since.
Is Panos Cosmatos a pen name? The guy who directed Beyond the Black Rainbow being literally named ‘space bread’ is a bit too perfect.
Bad idea of the day: a database of maps of conceptual spaces that are drawn like maps of physical spaces (ex., xkcd’s map of the internet & Knuppe’s map of the fields of mathematics)
when gods commune, dimensional portals open in their worlds and in come ideas from the other’s mind: stalking tangles of crystal, shy ripples in space, sentient smells, just about every type of elf, the occasional human

It doesn’t pay to be smart in interstellar space - once out of the gravity well, most races lose their sentience in favor of longevity, radiation tolerance and stealth
shooting through space in a stasis pod, awake only a millisecond every year, watching the stars whirl by like fireflies
liquid comets inhabited by space whales, occasionally leaving and traveling the vacuum for another flying ocean
@freemor@freemor.homelinux.net My take on this is… let’s let people ruin the web. Let centralized services control everything. But let us tech savvy people stick together and provide an alternative space for us. A space that’s welcoming to those that want to join and learn. Maybe people will come over when their online actions show real life consequences. There are statistics about decreasing social media use in Generation Z. Maybe they want to learn from us Internet-Dinosaurs :)
Bad idea of the day: using spaced repetition software to remind yourself to meditate on open questions

Solar eclipses are hard to come by on Earth but common in space, so offworld magical research stations modeled after orreries offer bespoke nights, engineered syzygies, and break new frontiers in topological astrology
Band name of the day: space away from earth
Hot take: the space of all possible understandable statements is composed almost exclusively of references to complex & abstract ideas with a tenuous relationship to any physical reality & unclear test conditions
Hot take: a hole isn’t the absence of a thing (outer space isn’t a hole, while the hole of a doughnut, full of air, is), but a violation of our expectation of continuity. We expect a full form & get a discontinuity in the middle.
article idea: media (esp. social media) as perverse psychogeography, & the inhabitants of transient spaces by career & disposition
swarms of mirrors graze the sun’s surface, smooth over a vortex here, strengthen another↵soon enough, convection cells become actual cells, differentiate, wings of plasma grow into space, a slow beat starts
Have you tried using markov chain monte carlo to perform a weighted random walk of solution space?
Bad idea of the day: Replace each word with another with maximum delta in word vector space but minimum edit distance, or vice versa. Tune weights until result is interesting.
Art project if you have too much money: Anonymously buy some 95% to 100% of your city’s ad space for a month and make it display only art and nature pictures; then hope for protests once the ads are back

A temple that does the same thing with sound that cathedrals do with light: Different notes wherever you go, entire spaces audible if you’re in the right place, a whirligig in the form of a boiling rose sounding like wind in the leaves of a brass tree
While liminal space is the space between, subliminal space is when you take the wrong door in liminal space and end up entirely behind the curtain, a shadow unnoticed by the audience, lost in the guts of the machine

Simplicity
That is a screenshot of my macOS desktop. It could be simpler, but as it is it does what I need, and want. When I need to use an app, I simply hit command (⌘) space and start typing the app name to launch it. That is, I use Spotlight.
Wouldn’t it be great that iOS could be customized like that too? Preferably it would be a setting, that would allow to turn off the visibility of all, or any app on the phone. Then, to open an app, one would use the [Spotlight]( … ⌘ Read more

Rather than sending advertisements into outer space, it would be really nice if we made it so that Facebook and Twitter would run reasonably on six month old mid-market desktop computers. These JS timeouts are annoying.
