How I archive my favorite TV show to get rid of Amazon Prime
I’m a fan of the German TV series “Notruf Hafenkante”, which is shown on the public broadcaster ZDF and is also available on their website. New episodes are released weekly, and older episodes are also made available on a regular basis. After a few months, however, they are no longer available for free. At the moment I have to buy an extra subscription for a Prime Video Channel to be able to watch all the old episodes. But that makes me dependent on Amazon, and I d … ⌘ Read more

Forgejo
A few weeks ago, it came to light that Gitea has been owned by a for-profit Gitea Ltd. for several months. The lack of transparency has disturbed the trust of many contributors and users. That’s why Codeberg (a German based non-profit association - disclaimer: I am a member of the association) has now started a soft fork: Forgejo. ⌘ Read more

DeepL Write
I’m a big fan of DeepL for translations. Before trying to write more blog posts directly in English to improve my skills, I wrote many blog posts in German and then translated them. The texts were probably better than my non-native English. ⌘ Read more

@mckinley@twtxt.net Being German I naturally don’t care for flags, but I have to admit the colored version on your website looks even nicer than the black and white one here. Are JGS at the very end the true initials of your name? And I can’t resist to ask which two states you left out? ]:-> Anyways, enjoy your holiday!

Why I renamed my blogs
After a bit of consideration and a poll on Fosstodon, which shows a clear result even before it ends, I decided to rename this blog from “jlelse’s Blog – Thoughts, stories and ideas” to “Jan-Lukas Else – Thoughts of an IT expert”. Likewise, my German blog from “einGeek – Mehr als nur Internet und Programmieren” to “Jan-Lukas Else – Gedanken eines IT-Experten”. ⌘ Read more

It seems that mobile reception along German high-speed train routes has improved lately (at least compared to 2019). I’m sitting in an ICE 4 between Hanover and Hamburg, and I’ve initiated a speed test via USB tethering. My mobile phone contract is limited to 10 Mbps, but I seem to be able to take full advantage of that. ⌘ Read more

Maybe I should write down my political views and thoughts in extra posts on my German blog in the future, instead of putting them in the monthly review and then translating them as well. English readers probably won’t get much out of it… Sorry! ✌️ ⌘ Read more

First experience with my new unlimited mobile phone contract while traveling: The phone hotspot works much better than the ICE (German high speed train) WiFi usually does. At most, there are small interruptions in tunnels, but otherwise surfing, writing e-mails, and listening to music work perfectly. Even remote programming works. It was worth it… ⌘ Read more

Learning European Languages (Michel Thomas)

Image

From Gottfriend Hensel’s 1791 Synopsis Universae Philologiae

I’ve said on a couple livestreams that the ideal way for an English speaker to begin learning or excel in learning other major European languages (Spanish, French, Italian and German) is to use Michel Thomas’s audiotapes. They can be found for free on Pirate Bay and other sites, but you can also buy them [on his official … ⌘ Read more

Is there a german word for the situation where somebody jokingly asks for the german word for an obscure phenomenon, and some Germans half-ironically half-sincerely trying to come up with words to describe the phenomenon?

Woohoo, sent Färjestad Karlstad home with a 2-1 so München is already qualified for the knockouts. 😃 It’s always like winning a trophy when a german team beats a Swedish team. #CHL
