In reply to: Wildermyth tells incredible stories that hit surprisingly hard
These stories mean that playing Wildermyth is not just about doing tactical battles from one end of a scripted narrative to another. It means tracking a small crew of changing people through their careers as adventurers. Sometimes their personali … ⌘ Read more

@niplav@niplav.github.io I like it, but you probably shouldn’t take only my word for it. I suspect it’s piggybacking a lot off of how much I liked its SNES predecessor and know/like the vibe of * Mana games. Also, the last three JRPGs I’ve played were Dragon’s Dogma, NieR:Automata, and…Chrono Trigger. I don’t know what’s good and new in JRPGs ever since Square left Nintendo. I’m just glad they’re back.
Hedonism, Asceticism and the Hermetic Answer
The modern world more or less gives you the philosophical choice of either Hedonism or Asceticism. You never really hear it in those terms, but that’s how it is.

The Parable of Alien Chess
A parable on the Logical Postivist “interpretation” of scientific models.
Suppose an alien race comes to Earth and wants to observe our games. They are very interested in chess, despite the fact that they have eyes with properties that make it impossible to make out what actually happens on a chess board.(The whites and blacks and squares all blur together.)
They can still learn about … ⌘ Read more

Of all the updates in today’s brew update && brew upgrade, the last one I expected was an update to a game originally implemented in the late ’70s. And yet, GOFAI/dungeon is now at 4.1.

@mdosch@mdosch.de I’ve tried to play games on my phone and iPad but none of the games I’ve ever played on them seem to stick. I’ve had fun — briefly — with Threes and FTL and Really Bad Chess and so forth, but I don’t seem to stick with any one game on my iOS gizmos like I have with, say, FTL-on-Steam, much less TF2 or Dota 2.
@adiabetic@www.frogorbits.com I am strongly refusing to use Apple products but for different reasons. But I wouldn’t consider anything except a computer or a console appropriate for gaming. Pads and phones might be for casual games but not for gaming.
Anyone who says that iPads are bad for gaming is an ignoramus and/or a liar. I beat Picross S’s P060 and I wouldn’t have been able to finish it if I hadn’t been able to take pictures of the TV with my iPad to be able to easily back out of hypohetical block arrangements that turned out to be wrong.
