It suddenly occurred to me that I’ve become that guy: the guy who rents a car with a fancy touchscreen center console and immediately goes to the “About” page in the console settings to look at the open source licenses.

**RT by @mind_booster: .@OpenSourceOrg to the European Commission: make space for patent-free standards too

some supposedly “open“ standards – including those ratified by SDOs like ISO, CEN and ETSI – can’t be implemented without buying a license

Looking for a Docker Alternative? Consider This.
Docker recently announced updates and extensions to our product subscriptions. Docker CEO Scott Johnston also posted a blog about the changes. Much of the discussion centered on what the licensing changes mean for users of Docker Desktop, which remains free for small businesses and several other user types, but now requires a paid subscription — starting […]

Why I Use the GPL and Not Cuck Licenses
Every piece of software I write I license under the GNU Public License Version 3 (GPLv3) unless I have forked it from something else.

The GPLv3 is the premiere copyleft license, meaning that it not only allows users to run, modify and distribute their own versions of what I write, but it also requires that no one in that chain of development restrict and close-source that software: it and sof … ⌘ Read more

Impact Is Now Free & Open Source
My HTML5 Game Engine Impact launched almost 8 years ago. The last update was published in 2014. While Impact still works nicely in modern browsers, it lacks support for better graphic and sound APIs that are now available. I felt increasingly bad for selling a product that is hardly maintained or improved.

So as of today Impact will be available completely for free, published under the permissive MIT License.

Impact’s source is available on [gith … ⌘ Read more

Searching for the car
A year ago, Kent got his learner’s permit. With the help of John, and a little from me, he practiced driving for over 250 hours. A year later — more or less — on 9 March, he got his driver’s license, passing the practical test with a 96, out of 100 points, score. And so the asking for a car began.

What car should we get for a 17 year old? New, or [used](https://www.consumerreports.org/used-cars/best-used-cars … ⌘ Read more

Using Atom
I have used many editors in the past, either under Windows or OS X. Too many, I have really lost the count. The last one I used was Sublime Text. Great editor, cross platform too, but pricey. Each time I would get the nag, I would feel guilty for not buying me a licensed copy.

I tried Atom when it first came out. It was buggy and slow, really, really slow. Not anymore. I am using version 1.0.9 now, and it is a joy. So fast, so customizable, so complete, … ⌘ Read more

Four-way stop
Drivers in Orlando do not seem to know what to do when they reach a four way stop. It really makes me wonder how were they able to obtain a drivers license without that knowledge, as it is part of Drivers Handbook (search for “Stop Signs” on that page), the test, and occasionally encountered while driving.

For the record, and in case you live in Orlando, and do not know what to do on a four-way stop (also known as all-way stop) … ⌘ Read more

Microsoft DRM server going offline
Rob Bennett, head of MSN Entertainment and Video Services, wrote to customers in an email:

As of August 31, 2008, we will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for the songs you purchased from MSN Music or the authorization of additional computers. You will need to obtain a license key for each of your songs downloaded from MSN Music on any new computer, and you must do so before August 31, 2008. If you attempt to transfer your songs to additi … ⌘ Read more
