起初，范闲保持着第一季的精神状态，但随着对局势的觉悟提高，他从被动的逃避转变为主动的参与和谋划。然而，在抱月楼的事件中，范闲感受到了世界的不公，他的愤懑情绪开始积累。尽管通过和太子的合作初步解决了问题，但他的内心已经开始产生了波动。

第二季家宴皇子们都正襟危坐，只有范闲跪地不起狼狈不堪。如果说范闲假死归京的时候还对庆帝抱有一丝父子幻想，那么这场家宴无疑是将范闲父爱击碎的最后一击。他为了心中的正义拼死觐见，哪怕没有任何凭证也要公然举证长公主和二皇子与敌国有走私往来，他心怀一丝希望，试探着庆帝对他的偏爱想要求个公道，却只换来一句“你是什么人”。引以为傲的鉴察院提司腰牌被庆帝扔在湖中，赐予他的只有带着惩罚意义的赐婚。

如何理解庆余年2中的范闲？
“我不是我娘，做不到为了改变这个世界而活着，但我活这一世，最起码想要做一个自以为是的好人。让我的良心能平静一些。”正如范闲所言，他其实主观上并没有想要改变这个世界，他只是不想再看见像滕梓荆白死那样的事情发生，也不想再看到像老金头这样的寻常百姓含冤而死，所有的行为，都只是为了求一个公平。随着与这个世界的联结加深，范闲从原来被动的棋子，慢慢转变为主动执子的棋手。
太子说因为范闲是好人，所以他要防火烧镇赶尽杀绝，玩的一手螳螂捕蝉黄雀在后借刀杀人的戏码，这样才能让范闲和二皇子彻底决裂，确保范闲在自己的阵营。范闲身上的那股劲儿正是太子身在皇室所可望不可即的，平日里正襟危坐，只能在母后面前才能卸下防备轻松片刻。所以当母后问他为何如此看重范闲，他说谁不喜欢好人呢。

第一季最后留下了范闲被言冰云刺伤生死未卜的悬念，第二季就以假死脱身进行了衔接，关于这段浅谈谈我的观点，不对的话欢迎探讨。
二皇子以滕梓荆妻女、范思辙以及送给费老的羊肠手套威胁范闲逼迫其进行合作，但是范闲的第一季见到庆帝都不行跪拜之礼，他的人设不会允许自己委曲求全被二皇子拿捏。所以范闲想到了假死脱身，只要他一死，就可能在短时间内解除亲友的安危。他也没想过隐瞒，所以一回京就上殿眼含热泪和庆帝陈述自己的罪行。这不但巧妙破解了二皇子的设局，也能将范闲从棋子转变为执棋者，化被动为主动，接下来的剧情将围绕范闲之死展开，各方势力也由暗到明。
庆帝作为绝对权力拥有者，并不能接受范闲这种先斩后奏的做法。棋盘上的棋子脱离了自己的掌控，甚至收拢身边人一起欺瞒，他担心自己的权威被影响勃然大怒，也担心范闲一死，神庙的秘密再无音讯。最是无情帝王家，即使是自己的儿子，庆帝也不能允许他逃离自己的控制。
