北京往来新疆西藏等地，传统上以兰州-包头-张家口等地为落脚点，于是北京-张家口这段路就必然往西北方向走。
选择这条路线的优点很多，一是利用永定河和黄河的山水之势，过太行山到坝上草原、河套平原和河西走廊，沿途一马平川，没有高山大河了，一天内能加急赶的路比走内地省份要多。二是蒙、藏、回这些游牧民族的物产、文化、生活习惯都很相似，聚居迁徙的路线都在这一带。商贸人文交流比较便利。最后这条路线经过的关隘比较少，少进城少收税，且沿途几个落脚的重要城市之间都大约是300-400华里的距离，官方的馆驿可以保障日行千里。商队的马帮驼帮带个三天左右的给养就可以很安全地行进，沿途水草丰美，粮草补给也有保障。部分路段甚至有季节性水路可用。
