LLMs don’t have an understanding of anything. They can only regurgitate derivations of what they’ve been trained on and can’t apply that to something new in the same ways that humans or even other animals can. The models are just so large that the illusion is impressive.

From my bed, I can hear a noise outside that is most likely a confluence of insects and distant freight trains but sounds eerily like the static-laden cacophany of an old radio. I would go out to see what it is, but a small part of me is worried I might end up walking into an episode of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” if I do.

It’s certainly true that current language models show an obvious lack of understanding in many situations, but I find the trend impressive. I’m on a train again. This time I’m going home from Hudiksvall after a
grueling weekend.

I went from Malmö on Thursday morning and worked the entire day on
trains. I arrived in Ljusdal after close to nine hours. I checked in
at the only hotel in town again and, after a quick meal and glass of
