When we arrived for the setup, the Düsseldorf youth group was dismantling their camp on the same spot that we had originally booked. But the camp site manager told us that we were the only group on the entire camp site, so we could select any spot, whatever we liked. That was really great, because originally we would have needed to transport all food 150-200 meters from the kitchen to our site. Hence, we just decided to set up in front of the kitchen. We still could just use the entire camp site for games, separate the heavy snorers from the rest, etc.

The only downside was that the sanitary facility was on the other end of the camp site. So, when taking a shower, going to the loo, washing the dishes, we had to always hike over the entire camp site. The kids and their leaders had to do their dishes themselves, this was a tent camp, not a hotel visit after all. Being a member of the kitchen team, we of course took advantage of the dishwashing machines, though. :-) In a traditional tent camp, the kitchen’s dishes are washed by the rotating dish/kitchen service. All children have to participate in that a few times.

On the second to last full day, some camp constructions were built. That spot was another ten minutes hike into the woods. Not sure why the that program wasn’t done right at the beginning but towards the end. That would have been a great playground throughout the camp.

Something felt definitely wrong, I got up much earlier during the camp than when I have to work. Typically, I woke up beween 6 and 7 because I really had to go to the loo. There was almost always somebody already awake from the kitchen teammates or leaders. So, I always decided to not return to bed. When I was the very first one, I turned on the coffee machine and water kettle to the delight of the others and five minutes later, another person arrived at the kitchen. I’ve been away with the scouts in our district summer camp. The nearly two weeks were absolutely amazing, mentally a great vacation. On the other hand, physically not so much. But I’ve still got Monday to recover from my holiday. :-)

And back in the days, we had wonderful deep mud all around us, too! In extreme years we even needed to leave the camp ground for a day and walk to a gym with all the kids. There was just too much rain and the creek dangerously high.

We once had an actual creek running through the dining tent before the kids arrived. Luckily, it didn’t originate from the official creek, but the water came down the hillside. Unimaginable today with all these droughts in summer. Many creeks around here are dried up for several weeks, if not months now.

It was a question of the mindset. Once we supervisors just made the best out of it and tried to had fun, the kids typically didn’t mind the mess either. Besides building huts, one of the most favorite things ever was actually “Matschschöpfen” (scooping mud). The kids scooped puddles into wheel barrows using giant soup ladles from the kitchen. “Sorry kids, time is up for today. Whoever sits in the closing circle first gets to go first tomorrow.” Unfortunatly, I don’t find any photos from that.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de I usually don’t listen to metal where the singers scream. There are only very, very few bands where I find that actually pleasing.

Two decades ago or so, we young supervisors compiled ourselves a cassette for our forest recreation week. One of us had an old ruggedly built radio with a cassette deck powered by a bunch of large Baby (?) batteries. One side had “working music” which we played back while working in the evenings and night, e.g. gathering firewood in a handtruck for the campfire and things like that.

I used something by either Finntroll or Turmion Kätilöt for the “wakeup music” side in the morning. The kids slept at home, but there were always some supervisors sleeping at the camp. The SÜT, the Standard-Übernachtungsteam, consisted of mostly young folks, about sixteen to early twenties. It was completed by wiser people in their fourties. Each morning, metal blasted through the dining tent that we converted into a sleeping tent. :-) Good times!

When I checked at the beginning, the sun was already way behind the trees. I then decided to wait until the end before leaving the house and melting in direct sunlight at 31°C. At the hill, there were around 15 people in camping chairs and on picnic rugs. Some dragged out their camera gear as well.

My first two photos were through the eclipse glasses. In contrast to others, I didn’t bring my tripod and just used a tree as a crappy makeshift one. With the large zoom it’s impossible to keep it still for one second (what my cam decided to be the exposure time). Leaning the camera against the side of the tree is just not good enough.

@prologic@twtxt.net Well, 15 shows the site. On the left, I had a roll mat on a tarp. I borrowed some “NVA tarps” from the scouts for this trip. The scouts got them from the National People’s Army, the German Democratic Republic’s armed forces after Germany was reunited. They’re 1.75m x 1.75m in size and weigh 1.3kg, quite heavy, but super awesome. One tarp on the bottom, another one to cover up the clothes, shoes and sleeping bag in order to protect against the thaw. Finally, a mosquito net over all that, hung from a rope between two trees.

My mate just used a hammock with a mozzie net on the right hand side. The third tarp served as the luxurious bedside carpet. :-)

We sat on my second tarp to chill and enjoy the sunset and surroundings. It was nice to notice birds etc. die down. It took a really long time for the last light to fade away. Since we have a very high risk of forest fires, we of course couldn’t have a camp fire. But after all the exhaustion, I didn’t even miss it for one second.

Since we had dinner at home before leaving, all we brought were two lye rolls, two grain rolls, two brezels, some sausage and chocolate biscuits for breakfast. From the 2.5l of water, I ended up using 2l. It’s always good to have a little extra, despite the unnecessary weight. We had brekkie a few kilometers further on a bench in the shade. The first bench was already in direct sun.

Our camp site was maybe 30m to the side and a few meters down of a summit path hidden behind some trees and bushes. We were quite lucky, the other side of the hill got quite a bit of a breeze at night. We could hear the leaved treetops making much more noise behind us.

The temps were supposed to hit 14°C just before sunrise. Since we didn’t bring a thermometer, I can’t tell for sure. I was rather hot in my sleeping bag, so I had to pull out my arms every now and then. My mate’s sleeping bag was a little lighter and, unfortunately, the zipper jammed up. Since it didn’t close all the way, it felt quite a bit cold I was told in the morning. When we got up at 6ish (we said, we don’t care about time at all), it was probably already 16°C if not more. I brought a jumper, but a t-shirt was already nice enough to wear. The jumper just served as my pillow. The mercury raised by the minute then.

Yeah, I circled the spot with a biro to keep an eye on it. Until now, there’s absolutely nothing to see. Looks like I got lucky.

The firefly season is ending. I only saw 200 of them or so. There was one female directly on the forest road. If only I brought my camera and tripod, that would have worked out I reckon. I had my torch with me and this looked really cool.

Dusk took forever today. It was really long light out there. Full moon is tomorrow.

On the way back, there was suddenly a load clatter and crashing sound 100 meters away from me. I didn’t see anything, but a tree fell over in the forest out of the blue. Fuck me dead, that was scary as hell. Luckily, I was already on the main road, only meadows around me. It’s the second time I witnessed a tree accidentally coming down. The first one was during the most expensive hail storm in our area so far in 2011 behind me when setting up a summer camp. The weather changed in less than 15 minutes.

Maybe not such a good idea to go out so late alone. :-? Any rustling in the forest immediately reminded me of the boar the other day. Luckily, always false alarm. Still a bit terrified from that event.

We cleaned up the forest today with the scouts at absolute dream weather. Blue sky, no clouds, 19°C sunshine. In the morning it was still quite chilly and windy, though. We didn’t find anything spectacular, maybe a rubber dinghy, three car tires and a broken ratchet strap are the most outstanding things to me apart from all the general rubbish, cigarettes, glass, wet wipes, etc. Still, a very fun activity. In the end we had bockwurst, grilled cheese and lye buns on the camp fire.

I then went for a quick stroll with my mate. It’s crazy how quickly the clouds moved in, 30-45 minutes tops. There will be rain in an hour. And the coming days only reach half the temps. I’m glad I took advantage of the great spring day. Haven’t seen Azabache yet and with the rain on deck, the odds are against him and me.
