Os Açores são hoje uma referência internacional na conservação marinha. Com o Parque Marinho dos Açores e a RAMPA, cerca de 30% do mar da região está protegido, sendo mais de metade classificada como Zona de Proteção Total - verdadeiros santuários onde não são permitidas atividades extrativas, incluindo a pesca.

Estas áreas são essenciais para a regeneração dos ecossistemas, a proteção de espécies vulneráveis e a resiliência do #oceano face às #AlteraçõesClimáticas. A longo prazo, beneficiam também as pessoas, ao fortalecer a pesca, o turismo e a investigação científica.

Está em discussão, na Assembleia Legislativa Regional, uma proposta que pretende permitir a pesca de salto e vara nas atuais zonas de proteção total, alterando o regime que sustenta o Parque Marinho dos Açores.
