@movq@www.uninformativ.de The nice thing about properties is that you can compute and cache things on the fly at first attempt and also ensure validation for writing. But like you said, since it’s not obvious that reading or writing might do some more things, it’s strongly advised to avoid doing expensive stuff disguised as properties.

I reckon the vast majority of property use cases is to provide read-only access. At least that was my impression when I was doing a lot more in Python.

Personally, I think that this just reads a lot nicer:

oink.my_property
oink.my_property = 42

Than:

oink.get_my_property()
oink.set_my_property(42)

Btw, any field access is implemented using method calls. I might be wrong, but I believe there’s always __getattr__ and __setattr__ involved. 8-)

I will very likely add a way to delete your feed(s) from the search engine, because I do thing that’s important. But as Art 17 points out, we can’t really guaranteed deletion in everyone’s caches around the planet haha 😆

The only place where this would be an issue is the Twtxt Search Engine – But as the GDPR also points out:

The one place the “it propagated and I can’t recall it” problem is legally acknowledged is Art. 17(2), and it explicitly scales to what’s technically feasible:

“…the controller, taking account of available technology and the cost of implementation, shall take reasonable steps, including technical measures, to inform controllers which are processing the personal data that the data subject has requested the erasure…”

Best-effort, given the technology. A decentralised, append-only, content-addressed feed is the available technology, and its limits are baked into the standard the law applies. Nobody — not the user, not you — is obliged to guarantee every cached copy vanishes.

I don’t know why, but either Jenny’s behaving different after the last update, or I Fucked up something and I have no Idea how to fix it.

Symptoms:

• I don’t have copies of my New Posts in my Maildir after posting them (as in I don’t see them in neomutt’s inbox).
  
• Nor fetch or fetch context (if they get replied to) seem to fech them auto-magically.
  
• I had to do a full whipe (~/Maildir/twtxt and ~/.cache/jenny) in order to get them fetched back.

I think Yarn has Gabes nick cached, and mentioning is broken because of that. Let me check my followings, to be sure.

Oh if we’re talking about the twtxt.app client, that’s a different story. I still consider that alpha/beta quality. Lemme look into that. It has it’s own cache of course (using IndexDB) and it’s entirely possible some behaviours are still not quite right yet…

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org Found it and fixed it! 🎉 The crawler’s discovery spider was fetching every feed a second time, without any conditional headers (plus a couple of other politeness bugs: redirected feed URLs never stored their cache validators, and there was no floor between re-fetches). Now every feed is fetched at most once per crawl, always with If-Modified-Since / If-None-Match, and never more than once per 15m no matter what. Just deployed — please keep an eye on your access logs and let me know if you still see anything impolite from the crawler 🙏

Every now and then, I think that I have carefully proof-read my message enough times and hit the “Add message” button in tt. But then, in the message tree, I spot another missed typo. My process is then to go to my twtxt.txt and fix it by hand. However, I still have to clean up tt’s cache. This is rather tidious:

1. Recall the sqlitebrowser ~/.local/share/twtxt/tt2.sqlite from my shell history.
   
2. Switch to the “Browse data” tab.
   
3. Go to the messages table and wait a second or two until it’s loaded.
   
4. Sort by the created_at column twice, so that I get descending order.
   
5. Select the first message, which is typically the one in question.
   
6. Find the “Remove currently selected row” button in the tool bar.
   
7. Commit the changes.
   
8. Close sqlitebrowser.
   

So, I finally implemented the removal of messages from the cache in tt. I can now hit d and confirm the removal. Bam! Should have done that ages ago!

Next up is the search, I think.
