5 star reads of 2025 worth mentioning
Someone has asked recently on a toot for others to share their ‘list of 2025 books’. Instead of pointing out to the list of what I’ve read, I’ll instead mention a few ‘5 star’ books I’ve read in 2025 that I think is worth pointing out towards.
By no particular order (well, the order in the photo, really…)
- AJ Pearce’s “Yours Cheerfully” and “Mrs Porter Calling”, books 2 and 3 of The Emmy Lake Chronicles. I’d already read the first book in the series and considered it a five stars read, and I plan to eventually read the fourth and last book in the series - the paperback edition is out next August. This isn’t a deep or profound book series - and doesn’t need to be in order to be a good one. It’s a series depicting the life of a young woman in war-time London. Each of these books made me cry and made me laugh, and I have found some comfort reading them in a time where, in many aspects, it feels like we’re living in a pre-war era…

Deve ser referendado?: MM - não (mas possivelmente mandaria tropas); AV - não sabe (mas acha que há extrema esquerda no parlamento português); AF diz que não só não como não é constitucionalmente possível; AS não falou de referendo, provavelmente mandaria tropas; CM também diz que o referendo sobre isso não é sequer constitutional, acha que devíamos era estar -já- a contribuir com geradores para aquecimento e meios para habitação temporária. GM diz que referendo não é questão, e que não é a favor de mandar tropas para lá mesmo em missão de paz. CF acusa AV de dizer que o apoio à Ucrânia é incondicional mas depois acrescenta “incondicional, mas”, e que isso não é incondicional. AV responde a dizer que estão de acordo, e depois volta a dizer que não está. JP diz que o PR vai decidir o envio ou não de tropas face a cenários muito específicos. Diz que “eu sou pacifista, mas”.
Esta é a minha thread de toots mais longa de sempre, acho eu, e começo a achar que devia ter escrito isto num blog post… oh well, desculpem qualquer coisinha.

FTR, I see one (two) issues with PyQt6, sadly:
- The PyQt6 docs appear to be mostly auto-generated from the C++ docs. And they contain many errors or broken examples (due to the auto-conversion). I found this relatively unpleasent to work with.
- (Until Python finally gets rid of the Global Interpreter Lock properly, it’s not really suited for GUI programs anyway – in my opinion. You can’t offload anything to a second thread, because the whole program is still single-threaded. This would have made my fractal rendering program impossible, for example.)
