the original plan was to offer subscriptions for something like $5/mo, but today they launched free of charge. they will introduce premium features in the future.

they just got acquired by automattic (the company who made wordpress and recently acquired tumblr).

automattic donated $5 megadollars to the matrix.org foundation in 2020, so I have a pretty good feeling about them.
