Gajim: Development News April 2022
This month came with a lot of preparations for the release of Gajim 1.4 🚀 Gajim’s release pipeline has been improved in many ways, allowing us to make releases more frequently. Furthermore, April brought improvements for file previews on Windows.

Changes in Gajim

For two and a half years I (wurstsalat) have been writing (and translating) Gajim’s monthly development news. Keeping this up on a monthly basis takes a lot of time and effort. Upcoming development news will … ⌘ Read more

I’ve always found that “living at my means” has paid dividends. To many folks, ‘round these parts, they’d consider it “living below my means,” but that’s mostly because they “live beyond their means.” Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times? | Hacker News

Ignite Realtime Blog: Openfire 4.6.5 released
Although we’re preparing for the Openfire 4.7.0 release, the recently discovered vulnerability in the Apache Log4j utility prompted us to push an immediate release of Openfire to address that issue. This release, Openfire 4.6.5, is available now.

We urge you to update as soon as possible. If that’s not feasible, then we advise you to apply the documented workaround (in the form o … ⌘ Read more

The workflow app on iOS is magic. I now have a button that asks me to select a picture, then converts it to png, resizes it, strips the metadata, scps it to my jumphost, scps it further to my gopher jail and into my paste directory, constructs the http proxy URL and opens it in safari. All without user-interaction. Now I can share my mobile life with you guys! Prepare for cat pictures!

Morale
Last week I wrote about Kent’s Spelling Bee, and how preparing for it was hard for him and I.

Well, the Bee came and went, and I forgot to come back to post the results. He misspelled “ _morale_” (he spelled it as “ moral”) and finished in 4th place—for me, it doesn’t make sense, as I have always considered first, second and third place relevant, but fourth?—, which still qualified him to go to the State competition. That, of course, means more pract … ⌘ Read more

Mi vieja

Image

She created me, all my flaws and gifts unintended. She nurtured and guided me through life the best she could, suffering for my mistakes—but always hopeful—and rejoicing on my victories. Always supportive she gave herself to me (and my siblings), selflessly.

After a lifetime mission, her time around here has expired. We knew it would come, but never fully prepared for it. And so we wept, sadness seeping throu … ⌘ Read more

Prepare to pay more
It seems that within four years –if nothing is done to prevent it (and nobody really knows what to do)– we [americans] will be paying $7 for a gallon of gasoline.

A very interesting post over Wired explains some of the reasons. A brief summary of them:

  1. Oil companies getting tax breaks, and not passing those savings down, butpocketing them.
  2. Theeconomic development in China and India, which increases the dema … ⌘ Read more

But Death and Taxes
“In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes” wrote Benjamin Franklin, 200 plus years ago and that truth remains unabated. It should be easy to figure out that we were involved on preparing our taxes. Being part of the decadent american middle class it is not hard to imagine that we treat taxes as what they are: a serious matter.

Years ago I used to get great refunds. Then they started to diminish and one lucky year I ended up paying $200. When Kent was born we got a sweet … ⌘ Read more
